Cataracts Treatment

At Vision Professionals of Leawood, our team of eye doctors provides treatment and management options for any number of ocular conditions and diseases. One of the more common eye conditions we see and treat in our office is that of cataracts, which can occur at any age but is most common in adults over the age of 40.

Causes and Symptoms of Cataracts

Specifically, cataracts occur when foggy deposits form on the lens of one of both eyes. These deposits generally start off small but grow over time to the point that they can affect one's vision quality. The specific cause of cataracts is not known, but people whose eyes have experienced high levels of unprotected sun exposure are at a higher risk of developing cataracts. Furthermore, adults over the age of 40 and those with a family history of cataracts are more likely to develop the condition at some point in their lives.

When cataracts are in their earliest stages, they often do not produce any noticeable symptoms. However, as cataracts grow in size and diameter, they can begin to obstruct the vision in one or both eyes, causing symptoms such as blurry and foggy vision.

How Our Eye Doctors Can Help With Cataract Treatment

If you're experiencing any symptoms of cataracts, it's important that you schedule an appointment with our eye doctors as soon as possible. A simple eye exam will allow us to diagnose cataracts, as our specialized equipment makes it easy to spot individual cataracts on the lenses of the eyes. From there, we may recommend various treatments depending on the size and severity of your cataracts. In some cases, small cataracts may not require removal and may instead be better treated with management to prevent the problem from getting worse.

In more severe cases, it may be necessary to perform a surgery to replace the damaged lens of the eye with an artificial lens. The good news is that with an artificial lens, permanent treatment of cataracts can be achieved.
