Recently, many of our patients have been inquiring about orthokeratology or ortho-k. Following are the answers to several questions our optometrist frequently receives regarding orthokeratology.
What is Orthokeratology?
Orthokeratology is an in-depth, non-surgical process that temporarily reshapes the cornea while you sleep. Oxygen permeable contact lenses will gently restore proper corneal shape overnight so you can see clearly throughout the day.
Is Ortho-K Safe?
The process is safe and painless for both children and adults. The lenses are designed and approved to be worn overnight. Our eye doctor will evaluate your condition to determine whether or not ortho-k is right for you. If you are deemed a good candidate for orthokeratology, we will carefully measure your eyes to ensure a proper fit.
Who Should Wear Ortho-K Lenses?
Ortho-K treats myopia (nearsightedness) and minor astigmatism. It is a good option for active teenagers and kids who would prefer not to wear eyeglasses. Ortho-K lenses are also a good option if you suffer from mild dry eyes and are unable to wear contact lenses.
How Long Does the Process Take?
Most patients see a dramatic improvement within a few days. After about two weeks, most candidates have nearly perfect vision.
Can I See While Wearing Ortho-K Lenses?
If you wake up during the night, you'll be able to see clearly without removing your lenses.
How Often are the Lenses Replaced?
Lenses are generally replaced annually. However, they may need to be replaced more often depending on how you take care of them or if protein deposits build up.
