Astigmatism

Astigmatism is an imperfection on your lens or cornea. The curvature is not correct and this causes distorted vision. A normal lens and cornea are smooth. This allows light to refract and focus directly on your retina producing clear vision. Astigmatism is a common condition, and it can be corrected. At Vision Professionals of Leawood, our eye doctor is dedicated to making sure that no matter what your age or vision issue, you will get the care and service you deserve.

Two Types of Astigmatism

Astigmatism may be caused by a distortion in either your lens or cornea. If it is caused by a distortion in the lens, then it is referred to as lenticular astigmatism. If it is caused by a distortion in the cornea, it is called corneal astigmatism. It does not matter which type you have, the distortion will cause your vision to be blurry. It is possible to have this distortion along with nearsightedness or farsightedness. Adults may easily realize their vision is not good but with children, often they have nothing to compare to so they don't recognize their condition.

Diagnosing Astigmatism

When you receive a comprehensive eye exam, the eye doctor will check the clarity of your vision. Three tests are commonly used, visual acuity, keratometry, and refraction. You will look at a few letters on a chart and be asked to identify them. Using these tests, a diagnosis should be quite easy.

Correcting Astigmatism

In the cases of astigmatism that are mild or moderate, the correction can be made with eyeglasses or soft contact lenses. If you have a severe case of astigmatism, you will do better with rigid contact lenses or eyeglasses. An autorefractor will help our eye doctor to determine the best corrective lenses for your eyes.
