How to Protect Your Child's Vision

Safety First When it Comes to Protecting Your Children's Vision!

Vision is a very important part of life, and it is important to instill good safety practices in our children at a young age. There are several tips that you can teach them now that will help them to make protecting their vision a lifetime habit.

  • Sun Protection - while we may be on top of the sunscreen and our little ones know the importance of full-coverage and reapplying their sunscreen when outdoors, they may not practice the same habits when protecting their eyes. Sunglasses that are polarized offer strong protection from the sun's UV rays that can cause damage to both the skin and the eyes. A wide-brim hat is another alternative, and children should always be taught to never look directly into the sun.
  • Swim Goggles - who doesn't love to spend a hot day splashing around in the pool? This favorite pastime, while enjoyable, can create a dangerous environment for the eyes! Chlorine and other chemicals that are used to manage the germs and bacteria in a swimming pool are also culprits in eye irritation and possible damage. Kids who use swim goggles can avoid the redness, burn, and overall discomfort that swimming in a chlorinated pool can cause.
  • Safety Goggles - any time any power tools are being used, or there is a lot of construction dust and debris that is airborne, it is important for kids to understand the need for safety goggles is such situations. Provide a good example by always utilizing eye protection while doing any home improvement projects. Lawn care is another task that often requires additional eye care, as well as riding on any type of motorcycle or all-terrain vehicle.

Installing smart habits for eye care at an early age can help your children understand the importance of protecting their eyes and vision!
