Is Your Health Affecting Your Vision?

Many of our vision patients are surprised to learn that their overall health can have a significant impact on your vision. If you are concerned about your vision and are also experiencing some health issues, you may want to pursue coordinated care to deal with both conditions effectively. High blood pressure, diabetes, and deficiencies in vitamins A and D can all create problems for your vision. If you have difficulty seeing in dim light or blurry or double vision, it may be due to health issues. Annual eye exams are also effective in detecting many health conditions that can sometimes remain asymptomatic.

Ways that Your Diet can Impact Your Vision

Vitamin deficiencies can do more than just make you feel tired and lethargic. In fact, if you are not getting enough Vitamin A or Vitamin D your vision may be negatively impacted. Vitamin A is instrumental in the production of rhodopsin, a pigment that allows the retina to absorb light properly and helps you to see clearly at all levels of light.  And the correct levels of Vitamin have been shown to help offset the development of macular degeneration as we age.

High Blood Pressure, Diabetes, and Your Vision

These two conditions can have a significant impact on your overall health but many patients do not consider the impact that they may have on their vision. In fact, it may even be your eye doctor who discovers these conditions that can be asymptomatic before you even realize that something may be wrong. Excess glucose commonly caused by diabetes becomes apparent in your eyes and your vision may be the first aspect of your health to be affected. Hypertension can cause your blood vessels to become smaller which can affect the flow of blood to the retina. Over time ocular blood vessels with reduced blood flow can experience permanent damage and lead to diminished vision levels.
