Hard To Fit Contacts vs. Regular Contacts

Hard To Fit Contacts vs. Regular Contacts

There are certain eye conditions that can make it hard to fit contacts in a way that is both comfortable and effective. Your optometrist may tell you that due to astigmatism contact lenses are not a viable option for you. At Vision Professionals of Leawood, we understand that there are many reasons for you to prefer contact lenses over eyeglasses and are here to find a solution for you.

Conditions that Can Make Contact Lenses Difficult to Fit

Many people who want to make the shift from glasses to contacts simply visit their optometrist and are fitted with new lenses. However, if you suffer from one of the conditions listed below, your contact lens exam and fitting may be a bit more involved.

  • Presbyopia- this is a common condition that often develops with age, and can require corrective lenses to correct both near and far-sight issues.
  • Astigmatism- is a bulge on the eye that can affect vision and can be difficult to correct.
  • Keratoconus - bulging and eye pressure are the main symptoms of this condition.
  • Giant Papillary Conjunctivitis (GPC) - causes a build-up of protein deposits on the eye which can affect your vision.

Your Optometrist Will Fit You with the Most Appropriate Type of Lens for Your Condition

  • Gas permeable- whether you suffer from GPC or Keratoconus, a gas permeable (GP) lens will help to reduce pressure on the eye and suppress the build-up of protein deposits on the eye.
  • Toric- these custom-fitted lenses are effective for patients with astigmatism because they adapt to the bulge in the eye and do not rotate.
  • Bifocal and Multifocal lenses- if you suffer from presbyopia, these lenses are an effective solution that will allow you to leave your glasses behind.
